The Top 10 Restaurants to order Uber Eats from in Perth
With the advent of Uber Eats and other delivery services, it’s become easier than ever to get food at your door… But is there any point if it’s shit?
The cost of living is going up and the prices being taken by the platform and even by the restaurant are just going up without a commensurate increase in quality, so I thought I’d help steer people to the good stuff!
I’m one of those people who gets angry when they’re hungry. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an innocent bystander or my friend, I get the red glowing eyes if you get between me and a good eating.
If you’re paying restaurant prices you should get restaurant food right?
A bunch of criteria decide who belongs on this list,
- Fresh ingredients especially things that are served raw like salad
- Quality cuts of meat prepared and cooked with care. There should be no hard to chew bits or bone where there shouldn’t be
- Components like pasta should be made fresh in-store, but it’s ok if a burger place doesn’t make it’s own buns. I’m not that strict.
- We aren’t chefs, but we have a bit of experience with cooking. Places we order from should be able to cook better food than we can, otherwise what’s the point of giving them our hard earned money.
- Value for money has to be within an acceptable range. For example a good meal can be great if it’s cheap, similarly if you’re charging big bucks and then not cooking things properly.. we’re asking for a refund.
I’m based out of the Victoria Park area, east of the CBD so apologies if your place to eat was missed in my radius!
I’ll try to keep this list up to date as restaurants fall in and out of favour.
#1. Ischia — $$$
We live next to several Italian restaurants but continue to order from Ischia who are much further away in the city. Apart from the fact that their food is proper restaurant quality — it’s also somehow warmer than food being delivered from much closer by.
It might seem pricey to pay $30 for a main, but consider how much it’d cost you to buy the same ingredients from the supermarket to cook for two. To cook as good as Ischia you’re looking at a grocery bill that is nearly the same price, perhaps even more, paltry leftovers you may not eat and a destroyed kitchen that won’t get touched until the weekend.
We love Ischia. For $100 you can get a meal for two that tastes like it came out of a loving grandmother’s kitchen. If you don’t have someone like that in your life like us, you’d probably pay anything for food like this.
#2. Tagine Tapas and Grill Leederville — $$$
It’s said that Moroccan cuisine is some of the most refined cooking and that’s reflected in the dishes at Tagine Tapas and Grill. Not everything on the menu is to our tastes, but even ones we don’t love are still tasty.
In the age of downsizing, restaurants have certainly reduced what they give you to take away. The size of what you get from Tagine seems to rebuff that trend — we’ve consistently had more than enough for lunch the next day.
With large portions and incredible flavour — this place is great value. You could get away with just ordering a main and some sides, but I’ve rated this as a pricey restaurant just because the barrier to entry for a meal is still in the higher end of town. If you share or eat your leftovers, it’s a bargain.
#3. Hermanos Cantina — $$
There used to be a lot more Mexican places around Perth but as the winds changed so did the restaurant choices. And forget authentic tacos like they make them in Mexico (or on Masterchef Australia), until we started ordering from Hermanos Cantina all I’d ever had at restaurants here was served in a USA style corn chip shell.
Speaking of corn chips — I’ve never had ones made to order like they do them here. Chilli con queso is one of my favourite starters and it’s still worth ordering from here even if it needs a re-heat after cooling down from it’s journey from Mt. Lawley to Vic. Park.
Pay attention to the fillings and trust your instincts. Two tacos is enough for most peoples appetites, three if you’re feeling really hungry. This is a great place to satisfy your legal obligation on Taco Tuesday.
#4. Short Order Burgers — $$
My spouse is half American and I’m half Filipino — so we have certain expectations about getting a classic cheeseburger. Short Order Burgers seems to have seen that episode of Parks and Recreation where Ron Swanson prepared simple amazing food because that’s what this is.
If you want a good burger, just order or go in already. I won’t waste your time with any more of my words.
#5. Dapur Van Java — $
I have a lot of fond memories of holidaying in South East Asia and having some really delicious food in understated family eateries. Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten in my life is from Bali and while not explicitly Balinese the food at Dapur Van Java reminds me of some of the best I’ve had there.
The way that Dapur Van Java prepares well known dishes like Nasi Goreng with skewers and a fried egg shows a deep level of care and respect for the ingredients. All the vegetables in the fried rice are chopped beautifully, you can taste that the skewers are cooked over coals and cooked to perfection.
Whenever I want to feel a warm fuzzy feeling inside, I try to order from Dapur Van Java. There’s something about the consistent level of care in their cooking that just makes me feel like someone who loves me made it.
#6. 3230 Burgers — $$
This little spot just off Canning highway in Como is great — the fried chicken burger is crunchy, the beef patties are smoky from the grill and cooked perfectly. 3230 Burgers offers high quality food and is usually available for orders on Uber Eats 7 days a week.
They’ve recently changed away from beer battered chips though but we’re hoping this is only a temporary supply issue as they were previously excellent and now they’re just like everyone else's — merely OK.
#7. Little Ying Thai — $$
If you love the flavours of Thailand then Little Ying Thai is the place to go — whether it’s a curry or a stir fry every dish has the freshest herbs and veggies which leads to a much brighter tastier dish.
My favourite dish here is the Spicy beef basil stir fry, which has such a rich swathe of veggies and herbs it just reminds me of being in Thailand.
#8. Silk Road Uyghur Cuisine — $
Have I mentioned yet how much I enjoy the taste of charcoal grill? If you’re after something different yet familiar then check out Silk Road Uyghur Cuisine. I’d describe it as middle eastern flavours cooked Asian style.
This is that great jackpot where you have good flavour, big portions and the prices are towards the lower end for a big feed. Great value.
#9. Papa Sweet Tooth Vietnamese — $
If not for Uber Eats, we probably never would have tried this restaurant (it needs a renovation). Still, the actual food from Papa Sweet Tooth Vietnamese is really good — good value and reasonably fresh for the price.
If you’re after a Banh Mi or a rice dish then this is the place to go, however sadly I cannot recommend the Bun bo hue or any noodley soups like that due to the mix of salad they put into it. I don’t know why but they serve this with shredded lettuce instead of.. mint leaves and bean sprouts.
Strange soup combos aside, Papa Sweet Tooth is great for a quick healthy lunch and the rest of the menu is proper including the roast pork rolls.
#10. Lola’s Filipino Diner — $$
Lola’s Filipino Diner serves a bunch of familiar favourites from eateries back in the Philippines. Our favourite thing to get is a chopped pork liempo with garlic rice. You don’t see calamansi fruit very often outside the Philippines so it feels so authentic to have the correct citrus fruit to squeeze onto the grilled meat. The rice is a bit oily but all together is a tasty set.
I feel a bit bad putting Filipino food at the bottom of this list but that is just how it’s played out when comparing for the factors I mentioned — particularly when it comes to meat quality.
While I can’t fault the cooking itself, it’s delicious, the cuts of meat sometimes are a bit hard to eat which would be acceptable if the meals were on the cheaper end but they’re not.
Hope this list has been helpful for you in choosing a place to eat! If you would like to know places I’d suggest avoiding, please get in touch privately.
